With the Prime Minister’s visit to Udaipur, the BJP has made its intentions clear; Mewar is not an area it intends to ignore. The BJP has set the wheels in motion to maintain the electoral success it managed to garner in Mewar in 2013. Modi’s visit to Maharana Pratap memorial is being seen as a clear message the party has given on its ideological stand, Akbar vs Pratap controversy notwithstanding.

The most prestigious among the projects that were lined up for inauguration by the PM was Kota hanging bridge and there was serious deliberation about Kota being the venue for the function. As per informed BJP sources, the party wanted to send out a message for Mewar and Udaipur was chosen.

Rahul Gandhi’s visits to Rajasthan in July and August also helped shape BJP’s decision to select Udaipur. Mewar has 35 assembly seats spread across 7 districts and BJP holds 30 of them, something it wants to continue.

A visit to the Marwar icon Maharana Pratap’s memorial is also seen as a message that says BJP would not compromise on its core ideology as BJP is in no mood to slow down on its course of history correction and that BJP and the RSS are on the same page over these issues.

Rajasthan has been accused of trying to rewrite history when it changed class X textbooks and varsity curriculum related to Pratap. It declared Pratap as the winner of the 1576 Haldi Ghati battle against Moughal king Akbar.

The prime minister’s tweet about paying respects to Maharana Pratap was the cause of satisfaction to many. “Pratap laid down his life for the nation, society and dharma and the PM’s visit is with respect to the values we hold dear,” said Omkar Singh Lakhawat, Chairperson rajasthan heritage protection, and promotion authority.

Prime minister’s visit to Udaipur has set the agenda for coming times. The BJP has made it clear that it has set the ball rolling for elections not just in the state but also the 2019 parliamentary polls.
