Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot said that neither Prime Minister Narendra Modi nor BJP national president Amit Shah can save the BJP ship from sinking in the state. Gehlot was speaking to reporters in his hometown Jodhpur on Monday where PM Modi had addressed a rally earlier in the day.

Gehlot said that the government headed by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje came to power with a huge mandate but squandered it away by failing to complete public works in the last five years. "Since they failed to deliver, people are angry with the Chief Minister. The anger will spill over on December 7 when they will vote against the BJP government in state," he said.

Asked if PM Modi's visit to Jodhpur (from where Gehlot is contesting the polls) make any difference, Gehlot welcomed the PM to his hometown. He said, "The PM is welcome to Jodhpur. He should also witness the lack of development and government attention in this part during BJP tenure."

The senior Congress leader has been criticising the Raje government left, right and centre for corruption, and has been warning the bureaucrats to put their house in order or face the music if the Congress returns to power.

He also slammed BJP leaders for dividing politics based on caste and religion. He said, "They are now even asking the caste of Lord Hanuman. But they are not concentrating on farmers, the debt they are in, electricity and water problems."

He said, "Whether it is the current Prime Minister of the country or the current Chief Minister of Rajasthan, they don't behave like leaders. They are partisan and behave like BJP leaders." He said it is expected of political opponents to fight for ideology, but the BJP leaders don't do that and instead "they keep personal animosity".
