Commuters again had a harrowing time on city roads as heavy rains lashed the national capital on Friday morning, triggering major traffic snarls due to waterlogging.

It started pouring at 8am, causing peak-hour commuters to get stranded as major roads were flooded on account of poor drainage. Commuters, especially office-goers, had a harrowing time as traffic crawled on several arterial roads.

Massive jams were witnessed in major intersections such as ITO, Kashmere Gate, South Extension, Laxmi Nagar, Ashram Chowk, Moolchand underpass, Dhaula Kuan, Azad Marg, Gurudwara Nanakpura, Badarpur, Apsara Border, Yamuna Vihar, Okhla mandi, Uttamnagar, Kajori Chowk and Nehru Place.

“Traffic is slow in Nizamuddin, Greater Kailash 1, and Safdarjung in south Delhi,” said a traffic police official.

Heavy rains also led to peeling of road surface on some busy stretches like CV Raman Marg from Ashram Chowk towards the DND Flyover.

Also, the road near Andheria More in south Delhi was damaged. Motorists also faced obstructions in areas like Pragati Maidan, Nizamuddin, Sarai Kale Khan, Malviya Nagar, Nehru Place, ITO and Jhandewalan and Karol Bagh in Central Delhi.

Pedestrians and people riding motorcycles and scooters were seen taking shelter under Metro over-bridges and other places, creating traffic bottlenecks.

“I don’t understand why, as soon as rain starts, the roads start getting choked,” said Pankaj Kumar, a commuter.

The low-lying areas of Model Town, Timarpur, and Kingsway Camp in north Delhi remained waterlogged leading to congestions.

The municipal corporation received 25 complaints of waterlogging from across the city. Ten complaint of falling of trees were received by the civic bodies.

“The sky will remain cloudy, with rain and thundershowers in some parts of the city,” said an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official.
