PM Modi has time to travel the world, but hasn't visited even one farmer's home: Rahul Gandhi

Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi, who is on a three-day visit to Amethi, on Monday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to the media, Rahul said, "PM has time to travel the world, but no time to visit the home of even one farmer who committed suicide."

Asked by reporters how he would rate the NDA government's performance during first year in office, the Congress leader said, "If we talk of farmers and labourers, I will give zero out of 10 (to Modi government). (But) if some industrialists and corporate houses are concerned, I will give 10 out of 10." He was interacting with reporters at Haidergarh in Barabanki district en route to Amethi.

Referring to the cancellation of a mega food park in his constituency, he said, "Food park would have changed the face of Amethi. Farmers would have been benefited, but the Modi government took it away from farmers."

He further said, "We will fight for it and will try our best to get it back."

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) described Rahul Gandhi’s visit to his constituency of Amethi as a ‘forced’ tour, and termed it as one of the most underdeveloped places in Uttar Pradesh.

“Rahul Gandhi’s tour to Amethi should be called a forced tour to his own constituency. It is only because HRD Minister Smriti Irani had been to Amethi that acted as a teaser to Rahul Gandhi to force him to go to his constituency,” said BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra.

“Today, Amethi, which has been under the Gandhi scion for long, should have been a developed place, but the irony is that the constituency is one of the most underdeveloped constituencies of the state. The per-capita income of Amethi is one of the lowest in Uttar Pradesh,” he added.

Few days ago, the Union HRD Minister, who lost to Gandhi in the Lok Sabha elections from Amethi, chose the constituency to mount a counter offensive against the Congress leader, who has been aggressively attacking the "suit-boot ki sarkar" over issues ranging from the land bill to net neutrality since his return from leave.

She said, "When Rahul Gandhi spoke for the first time in Amethi, he was talking for a business house. He did not speak for the farmers of Amethi."

"If you look at the documents of district officials, you will understand that from 2010 to 2014, the land was not provided by Congress. Whatever help had to be given for gas was not given for long," Irani told reporters amid the raging row over cancellation of the mega food park project.
