Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday faced backlash on Twitter for his 'that kind of stuff' comment over NCC.
"I don't know the details of NCC training & that type of stuff, so I won't be able to answer that question," Gandhi replied when a student of Maharani’s Arts College of Women asked him about what benefits will he provide to NCC cadets after passing 'C' certificate examination in Karnataka.
Gandhi's reply did not go down well with the NCC students and others on social media. They were quick to criticise his lack of knowledge on the Indian military cadet corps.
Here are the 10 facts you should know about the National Cadet Corps (NCC):
1. The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is the Indian military cadet corps that is open for school and college students.
2. It is the largest voluntary uniformed youth organisation that enrolls cadets, both girls and boys, for all the three defence wings namely Army, Navy and Air Force.
3. The National Cadets Corps came into existence under the National Cadet Corps Act XXXI of 1948 (passed in April, 1948; came into existence on 16th July, 1948).
4. The main aim of NCC is to develop character, commandership, discipline , leadership, secular outlook , sprit of adventure and the ideals of selfless service amongst the youth of the country.
5. The NCC provides an environment conducive to motivate young Indians to join the armed forces.
6. The NCC cadets are given basic military training for parades and handling small arms.
7. Although the cadets and officers are not directly recruited to the military services, they are given more preference over normal candidates for selections solely based on achievements in the corps.
8. A cadet selected as a member of the Directorate contingent, for the month-long Republic Day (RD) Camp at Delhi, can be selected for the Republic Day Parade at Rajpath.
9. NCC 'C' certificate holders can directly face the SSB interview without appearing for the written examination.
10. Around 13 lakh cadets are enrolled in the NCC according to the latest report and the government has planned to expand it to 15 lakh in five phases by 2020.
