A day after Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Narendra Modi over demonetization, Union Minister of Textiles Smriti Irani on Thursday said that the Congress Vice President was trying to save his legacy by attacking the prime minister.

Speaking to the media, Smriti Irani said, "It is but natural that after returning from a vacation and self introspection, he must have been disturbed with the rising popularity of PM Modi."

"Rahul Gandhi making derogatory comments against PM and trying to save his political legacy is natural," she added.

On Wednesday, Rahul, who returned to India from an 11-day vacation, attacked Modi saying that for the first time in history, a Prime Minister of India was being ridiculed the world over.

Addressing a national convention of the Congress party on Wednesday, in the absence of party president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul said, "BJP, RSS and Narendra Modi have weakened institutions like RBI. First time in history Prime Minister of India is being ridiculed. The institution, the financial bedrock of the country has been ridiculed. The position of the RBI Governor has been ridiculed," he said.

Stating that the people of the country were wondering when 'acche din' will come, Rahul also said, "'Acche din' will come when Congress will come to power again in 2019."
