The 'Save the Constitution' campaign will run at the village level till April 14, 2019.
Launching 'Save the Constitution', a nationwide campaign to woo back Dalits and backward classes on Monday, Congress president Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of 'tarnishing' India's global reputation in just four years that was built by the Congress in 70 years.
The 'Save the Constitution' campaign will run at the village level till April 14, 2019.
Addressing Congress workers who had come from across the country and predominantly belonged to Dalit, backward and minority communities, major part of Rahul's speech centered around Dr Ambedkar. Even Congress workers were given participant badges bearing Ambedkar's picture with Save the Constitution logo.
Rahul began his speech by taunting Modi for his quote comparing work performed by Valmiki Samaj of removing human excretion and dirt as their spirituality.
"Valmiki Samaj cleans toilet not to feed for spirituality. This is the thinking of our PM," said Rahul. As Congress workers shouted anti-Modi slogans, taking a moral high ground, Rahul asked them not to do so as the fight of the Congress against an ideology and not an individual.
Rahul reiterated that important issues related to women safety, Dalit protection and the welfare of the poor have been completely neglected by the Modi government which is not paying attention to the tenets of the Constitution that was drafted by the Congress in the leadership of Dr Ambedkar.
"Garland Dr Ambedkar's statue as many times you want, the people belonging to this ideology can never respect Ambedkar and every person, every dalit knows this. He knows that Modi ji's heart has no space for India's dalits, India's women," said Rahul.
Choosing to speak in Hindi for a major part of address, Rahul held Modi style of governance responsible for destroying the social fabric of India.
"All institutions that were built after years of hard work have been subverted for political gains," he said.
Rahul also dared PM Modi to debate with in the parliament. "PM Modi can't face me in Parliament', dare him to a '15-minute debate'. I will talk about the Rafale deal, about Nirav Modi and Modi ji will not be able to stand there," he added.
He went on to say that all our democratic institutions have been filled with RSS ideologues. Discussions and debate and have seized to exist in these institutions.
"The party will work for the people of India to protect them, their ideas and build their future. No matter how much effort BJP puts in we will not allow them to toxicate the Constitution," Said Rahul adding that for the first time a government shut down the Parliament, when "occasionally its the opposition."
