The ongoing power struggle between the Puducherry government and Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Kiran Bedi will reach New Delhi next week when the all-party delegation, led by chief minister V. Narayanaswamy, meets with the President, Prime Minister and Home Minister to complain about the latter’s interference with the administration of the elected government.

The latest standoff pertains to the relieving of Puducherry Municipal Commissioner R Chandrasekaran based on a ruling of Speaker V Vaithilingam on March 30, after a legislator belonging to AIADMK (Amma) raised a privilege issue against the official.

Bedi, who was an official tour, sent a letter to Vaithilingam on Friday, but it was returned by the Speaker’s office stating that it was not signed by her. Infuriated by this, she sent a note through her secretary saying she was the competent authority regarding the official’s service matters and the Speaker’s ruling was invalid.

According to DMK leader and MLA  R Siva, all the party leaders who took part in the meeting were of the view that the L-G was overstepping into administrative matters. “It was decided to that an all-party delegation should visit New Delhi next week to petition the President, PM and Home Minister to seek recall of the Governor,” he told DNA. He said that it was also decided that a day-long bandh would be held if there was a need for it.

The all-party meeting was chaired by Puducherry Congress president A. Namachivayam. It was attended by Narayanaswamy, Siva, AIADMK leader Anbalagan, and CPI, CPM, VCK, IUML and AAP leaders, among others. The BJP and PMK did not take part in it.

Meanwhile, Chandrasekaran appeared before the privilege committee on Tuesday evening on the complaint of legislator Baskar.

Narayanaswamy on Monday said that the Speaker’s ruling was implemented immediately by him keeping with the rules governing the Union Territory administration. He said that if the ruling was not implemented by his ministry, they would be charged with dishonouring the ruling of the Chair.
