The President of India Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday appointed the senior most judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the 46th Chief Justice of India. He will assume the office on October 3 following the retirement of the present CJI Dipak Misra.

Justice Gogoi will be the first to become CJI from the Northeast. He was born on November 18, 1954 in Assam and hails from Dibrugarh. His father Kesab Chandra Gogoi was a practicing lawyer but later joined politics and went on to become Assam's Chief Minister in 1982. After completing his schooling in Assam, Justice Gogoi came down to Delhi to pursue his graduation from St Stephen's College. He later took his Law degree and decided to follow his father's footsteps. He joined the Bar in 1978 at the Gauhati High Court and maintained a reputation of being a no-nonsense lawyer practicing extensively in the fields of taxation, company law and constitutional law.

On February 28, 2001 came the big break when he was elevated as a permanent judge of the Gauhati High Court. After a gap of almost nine-and-a-half years, he was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court where he rose in ranks to be appointed as the Chief Justice on February 12, 2011. His call to join the bench at the Supreme Court came on April 23, 2012 and as CJI he will enjoy a term of over a year and one month ending with his retirement on November 17, 2019.

Justice Gogoi has been at the forefront of passing orders in several public interest litigations, notable among them being the issue of fast-tracking criminal cases against tainted elected representatives of Parliament/ Assemblies, and implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) for identifying native residents of Assam. History, though, will also record his name as the judge who took part in a historic press-conference on January 12 this year where he, along with three other senior-most judges, openly criticized the CJI for assigning politically sensitive cases to a specific bench.
