Poonch: Another soldier killed in Pak firing, toll reaches 11

The death toll in the ceasefire violations on LoC and International Border (IB) has now climbed to 11 since Wednesday night.

For the fourth day, the borders have been witnessing battle like situation in Jammu. Another soldier was killed when Pakistan opened indiscriminate fire on Indian forward posts and civilian areas in Mendhar sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district.

Signalman Chandan Kumar Rai had suffered grievous wounds on Saturday when he was manning the forward post on LoC in Mendhar sector.  He was immediately shifted to military hospital where he succumbed to the injuries on Saturday night.

An army spokesman said Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing of Mortars, Small arms and automatics in Mendhar sector which was retaliated strongly and effectively.

"However,  in the exchange of fire, Signalman Chandan Kumar Rai was grievously injured. However he succumbed to his injuries at the Military Hospital", he said.

Hailing from Village Nadesar of Sakaldiha tehsil in District Chandelier of Uttar Pradesh Signalman Chandan Kumar Rain, 25,  is survived by his father Satya Prakash Rai.

"Signalman Chandan Kumar Rai was a brave and sincere soldier.  The nation will always remain indebted to him for his supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty",  said the spokesman.

Sepoy Rai is the fourth soldier to have been killed in the last 36 hours on LoC and IB. A Border Security Force (BSF) Head Constable and a Lance Naik of the army were killed in Pakistan firing in Pakistan firing on Friday. A sepoy of the Army was killed on Saturday on LoC. 

The death toll in the ceasefire violations on LoC and International Border (IB)  has now climbed to 11 since Wednesday night.  More than 50 people have suffered injuries and thousands of people have fled their homes

Pakistan activated entire IB and LoC extended its shelling to newer areas targeting civilians and Indian forward posts on Friday night and Saturday.  Three civilians were killed when Pakistan shelled civilian areas in RS  Pura and Kanachak sectors on Saturday. 

Pakistan is using heavy caliber long-range weapons including 120 mm mortars, which has a range of seven kilometers, and 82 mm mortars, having a range of 4.5 kilometers, to inflict maximum damage deep into the civilian areas.
