Police arrests man for cheating woman impersonating as actor

The police today arrested a man for allegedly cheating a woman of Rs 37,000 and 70 grams gold ornaments impersonating himself as Odia film actor through social media.

Police recovered a motor cycle and 70 grams gold ornaments from his possession. The arrested man has been identified as Rashmiranjan Mahuty alias Shakti of Latipur village under Khariar police station limits in Nuapada district.

Police said a woman of Panikoili in Odisha's Jajpur had become friend with Ollywood actor through a Facebook ID in the name of the actor. In order to give her daughter a break in movies as a child artist, the woman then contacted the mobile number given in the FB ID. The accused responded the phone impersonating himself as Ollywood actor.

The accused, the police said, came to the victim's family at Panikoili in Jajpur district and demanded 1 lakh to give a break to the girl in the Odia movie in second week of April this year. The woman gave him of Rs 37,000 and 70 grams of gold ornaments for giving her daughter a break in movies as a child artist.

The woman suspecting foul play asked the accused to return the money and the gold ornaments, but he refused to do so and rather threatened her, the police said.

The woman's husband filed a complaint against the accused at the Panikoili Police Station on July 25.

"Based on the complaint, we tracked the mobile of the accused and arrested him from his native place late last night. We also recovered 70 grams gold ornaments from his possession. He has purchased a motorcycle with the money cheated from the woman. We have also seized the motor cycle," said Sarat Kumar Patra, inspector-in-charge of Panikoili police station.

Police also clarified that there were nearly 20 to 25 fake accounts by the name of the accused on social media.

The accused had deleted all his fake Facebook IDs when the Ollywood actor clarified that he is not on social media nor does he has any account.

The accused was arrested under various sections of IPC and of IT Act, police said.
