Finally, almost after a month and-a-half of the brutal murder of three members of a Dalit family—Sanjay Jadhav, his wife Jayshree and their 20-year-old son Sunil—at Ahmednagar, the police have arrested a person in the case. The person arrested is the son of the elder brother (Dilip Jadhav) of the deceased. The family however dubbed the arrest as a pressure tactics by the police.

The Pathardi police station, where the murder case was registered, confirmed the arrest of Prashant Jadhav (30), who had filed the first information report in the case. Police produced Prashant before the local court on Thursday. They have sought his custody for 10 days for further investigation.

Dilip alleged that the police had arrested Prashant as they had not been able to make any breakthrough in the case. The police have upbraided the members of our family, forcing them to accept that they had committed the crime, Dilip said.

"My son is innocent, I really don't have any idea why the police arrested him. They are aware that I had gone to Mumbai on Saturday to protest the killing of my brother and his family. It's their way of putting pressure on me," said Dilip.

The three victims had gone missing, and during a search operation, their bodies, chopped into pieces, were found in a well in Javkheda in Ahmednagar district on October 22.

According to the police, Prashant is the nephew of the deceased Sanjay Jadhav. And primary investigation has revealed that the murder is related to property and family dispute.

Sources in the police said they had got hints about the killer from the Narco analysis test conducted on the family members of the deceased. Police also suspect that other members of the family had helped Prashant in committing the crime. They also suspect that Prashant had been hired as a contract killer. They have traced the weapon and vehicle used in the crime.

"We have arrested one person in the case on the basis of evidence and have sought his custody for further investigation. We will arrest more people soon," said Pravin Salunke, inspector general of police, Nashik range.

The incident had led to widespread protest and had brought back memories of the horrific Khairlanji massacre in which four members of a Dalit family were brutally murdered.

Recently, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had met the members of the family and assured them of speedy probe. The CM had said that if the police do not solve the case within a specific period of time, the state government would have to think of transferring the case to the CBI.

Republican Party of India chief Ramdas Athavale and Bhraip Bahujan Samaj Party chief Prakash Ambedkar had visited the village and urged the government to ensure that culprits are booked.
Earlier, Maharashtra governor C Vidyasagar Rao has also urged the DGP to set up a special task force to look into the matter.
