The verbal duel between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continued on Friday as the PM accused Mamata of sheltering the chit fund scam accused, while she referred to him as 'Maddy Babu', saying that before elections, he becomes a 'chaiwala' and after elections, he becomes 'Rafalewala'.

Addressing a public meeting at Mainaguri in Jalpaiguri district, the Prime Minister described the state dispensation as 'a second Communist rule' which, like its predecessor, ignored the people.

"The government which the people of Bengal voted for had come as a government of maa, mati and manush, but they adopted a culture of violence. Didi is at the top but it is the dadagiri of others which is prevailing. She is impatient to reach Delhi, so she has left the reins of the state to syndicate operators," he said.

Referring to the recent sit-in demonstration led by Mamata against the CBI arriving in Kolkata to interrogate the city's top cop, the PM alleged that Mamata had been trying to shield those who had looted thousands through chit fund companies.

"When we come to power, we will pay back every victim of chit fund companies," he said at the rally, which was held after the PM inaugurated the Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court.

Over the ruling Trinamool Congress allegedly stopping BJP rallies in Bengal, he said that Mamata was impeding these rallies because she was afraid of the BJP.

Within an hour of his rally, Mamata, who was at Bengal Global Business Summit in New Town, addressed a press conference and said she felt "ashamed" to talk about the Prime Minister.

Mamata said: "He inaugurated the Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court, the money and land for which was provided by the state government. But no one from either the state government or the High Court was there."

She alleged that work on the Falakata-Salsabari section of NH-31D for which he had laid the foundation stone earlier in the day had been on for the past year and a half. "Neither the bride nor the groom is there. But the band has come to beat their drums," she said.

Calling the PM 'Maddy', Mamata said, "He never sold tea. Ahead of all elections, he becomes a 'chaiwala' and after elections, he becomes a 'Rafalewala'… It is unfortunate that because we had organised a rally they are scared."

Over the triple talaq issue, she said: "I am in favour of women but there is a system for everything."

Soon after PM Modi's rally, district TMC leadership of Jalpaiguri sprinkled 'gangajal' at the rally site saying that they were purifying the land.

TMC files plaint against PM

After PM Modi laid the foundation stone of four-lane project of the section of NH-31D between Falakata and Salsabari in Jalpaiguri section, TMC MLA and chairman of Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority, Sourav Chakraborty, filed a complaint against him and National Highways Authority of India, alleging that his name along with some other party MPs and MLAs had been used in the advertisement of the foundation laying stone, without their consent.
