A day before the opposition protests against demonetization in the Parliament premises, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reassured a group of Shiv Sena MPs on Tuesday that Centre is taking all measures to ease the hardships of the people. Led by Sena's leader in Lok Sabha Anandrao Adsul, 14 MPs of the party called on the PM to discuss the consequences of demonetization faced by the common man. NDA's biggest ally has been vocal in their criticism on the lack of planning by Centre while rolling out demonetization.

According to Sena MPs present in the meeting, the PM acknowledged the hardships of the people who are facing a cash crunch but said that it would not continue for a long time. While talking to Sena MPs, the PM also invoked late Sena supremo Bal Thackeray and the long-standing association between the two parties to reassure them in the wake of Sena leaders joining hands with the opposition in the march against demonetization last week.

While expressing their view on the difficulties faced by people, the party also urged the PM to allow co-operative banks and credit societies to exchange old currency notes. "We conveyed our concerns to the PM regarding demonetization and he heard us patiently. Since the rural economy is dependent on district co-operative banks and as nationalised banks are few in numbers, we urged the PM to bring co-operative banks in the demonetization drive," said Sanjay Raut.

"Over the course of last 13 days the on-ground situation has become alarming in terms of hardships being faced by common people whose daily sustenance is based on cash income. But the presence of nationalised banks is extremely limited in large parts of the country. It is the co-operative movement which has sustained the economic needs of this large section of our population for more than 50 years," the party said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, Arvind Sawant, Shrirang Barne, Anandrao Adsul, Rajan Vichare, and Gajanan Kirtikar were among those present in the meeting with the Prime Minister.
