PM Narendra Modi launches world's largest mobile phone factory in Noida

Last year, the government imposed taxes on import of key smart phone components as part of a plan to make India a electronics-manufacturing hub to boost growth and create tens of millions of new jobs.

The world's biggest mobile factory was launched in Noida in the outskirts of national capital on Monday, as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting South Korean President Moon Jae-in took Metro to reach the site. Both the dignitaries boarded the Blue Line of Delhi Metro from Mandi House station and deboarded at Botanical Garden station. They purchased token to commute like "passengers".

As soon as the word spread that PM Modi was travelling in Metro, people waiting to board the train along the 10 stations between Mandi House and Botanical Garden thronged to click pictures. The PM waved at the cheering crowd as they clicked photographs. They travelled via road from Botanical Garden station to the site of mobile factory, which will be fabricating 12 core phones a year -- ranging from low-end smart phones to the high-end S9 models. About 70 per cent of phones will be earmarked for domestic usage.

While launching the project, the PM said 40 crore Indians already own smartphones, while 32 crore people use broadband. He said 30 per cent phones for export will help place the country in the global market. "This step today would lend pace to Make in India, apart from empowering citizens... This is matter of pride for Uttar Pradesh and India," he said.

Last year, the government imposed taxes on import of key smart phone components as part of a plan to make India a electronics-manufacturing hub to boost growth and create tens of millions of new jobs. "Samsung has provided employment to approximately 70,000 people, the new plant will provide employment to 1000 more," Modi added. The PM said that the Rs 5,000 crore investment in Noida would strengthen the relationship between India and South Korea. He also took the opportunity to highlight his flagship programme of Make in India and said that the drive is not only an economic policy, but also an initiative to strengthen relationships with other countries like South Korea.
