Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed the "impressive performance" of the BJP in the assembly by-polls held in various parts of the country. He thanked the people for their "unwavering faith in politics of development and good governance".

"Impressive performance by @BJP4India and NDA in the by- polls in different parts of the country. Congratulations to Karyakartas," Modi tweeted. "I thank the people for the constant support, blessings & unwavering faith in politics of development and good governance," he added in another tweet. In the by-polls held on Sunday last, the BJP won in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Assam, according to the results declared.

There was some solace for the Congress in Karnataka where it won both the seats. The by-polls were held in nine Assembly constituencies in seven states, besides the Srinagar parliamentary seat.

Two seats each are in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh and one each in West Bengal, Assam, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. The BJP won Dholpur assembly by-election, with its candidate Shobha Rani Kushwah defeating her nearest rival of Congress Banwari Lal Sharma with a record margin of 38,678 votes. With this win, the BJP's tally increased to 161 in the Assembly of 200.

Shobha Rani got 91,548 votes against Congress candidate Sharma s 52875 votes, scoring a vote percentage of 62.15. In the 2013 assembly polls, the seat had been bagged by Shobha Rani's husband B L Kushwah, who had contested on a BSP ticket. Only two per cent turnout was witnessed in repolling in 38 polling stations in Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency, officials said. Repolling had been ordered at these polling stations by the EC following large scale violence during Sunday's polls for the prestigious seat. The by-poll result will be declared on April 15.

The BJP registered a huge victory in the Rajouri Garden Assembly bypoll in the national capital today handing a humiliating defeat to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, which finished a distant third and even lost deposit.

BJP-SAD joint candidate Manjinder Singh Sirsa bagged 40,602 votes rpt votes, over 50 per cent of the total votes polled, in a boost for the saffron party ahead of the April 23 municipal polls. Congress' Meenakshi Chandela finished second with 25,950 votes while AAP's Harjeet Singh managed to get only 10,243 votes, less than one-sixth of the total votes polled, and lost deposit.

In terms of vote share, the Congress staged a turnaround of sorts by getting around 33 per cent of the total votes cast,in a jump of over 21 per cent over the 2015 Assembly polls.

Around 47 per cent of the over 1.6 lakh electors of the west Delhi seat had cast their vote on April 9. With the victory, the BJP's tally in the 70-member Delhi Assembly will become four. The Congress does not have any presence in the House. The seat fell vacant early this year after AAP's Jarnail Singh quit as MLA to contest the Punjab Assembly poll against SAD patron Parkash Singh Badal.

Maintaining its hold, the ruling Congress in Karnataka today retained the Nanjangud and Gundlupet Assembly seats in its kitty in the by-polls. Congress' Kalale N Keshavamurthy defeated his nearest rival former minister V Srinivasa Prasad (BJP) by 21,334 votes in Nanjangud.

In Gundlupet, Geetha Mahadevaprasad (Congress) trounced BJP's C S Niranjan Kumar by 10,877 votes, an election official said. Both the seats were held by the Congress which faced a tough fight from its principal opponent the BJP, making it a prestigious battle ahead of the Assembly polls to be held in the state in about a year.

Here are statewise seat details of bypoll results:-

Delhi: BJP won the Rajouri Garden seat.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi -- where it won 67 out of 70 assembly seats in the 2015 elections -- suffered a humiliating defeat in Rajouri Garden assembly constituency and figured at a distant third after the BJP and the Congress.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa (BJP) defeated Meenakshi Chandela of the Congress by a margin of nearly 14,000 votes.

Sirsa garnered 40,602 votes, Chandela 25,950 and the AAP's Harjeet Singh 10,243 out of a total 78,091 votes polled.

The seat fell vacant after AAP's Jarnail Singh quit to contest in the Punjab assembly polls in February earlier this year.

Anil Dhiman defeated Promila Devi of the Congress by a margin of 8,290 votes.

The bye-election for the seat was necessitated after Bahujan Samaj Party legislator Banwari Lal Kushavah, the BJP nominee's husband, was disqualified due to his conviction in a murder case in 2016.

Jharkhand: Simon Marandi of the JMM defeated Hemlal Murmu of the BJP by 12,900 votes to win Littipara seat.
