Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted President Ram Nath Kovind on his birthday. Kovind was born on this day in 1945 in rural Kanpur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted President Ram Nath Kovind on his birthday. Kovind was born on this day in 1945 in rural Kanpur. 

"Best wishes to Rashtrapati Ji on his birthday. India has benefitted greatly from his wisdom and perspectives on various subjects. He has connected wonderfully with every section of our society. I pray for his long and healthy life," Modi tweeted. 

Several ministers and opposition leaders also extended their greetings to the President on his 73rd birthday. 

Home Minister Rajnath Singh also wished President Kovind in a tweet. 

"Warm greetings and my best wishes to the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovindji on his birthday. He is widely respected for his simplicity, clarity of thought and action and his concern for the poor and marginalised. I wish him a long and healthy life ahead. @rashtrapatibhvn," Singh tweeted. 

"Warm birthday greetings to President #RamNathKovind ‘ji – the people’s president. Your sensitivity to the pulse of India makes it an asset to adorn the highest position of the nation&make it truly democratic Pray toAlmighty for your long and healthy life," Union Minister Harsh Vardhan tweeted. 

"Warm birthday greetings to the President of India Hon’ble Ram Nath Kovind Ji. I pray for your good health and prosperity," Health Minister JP Nadda wrote on Twitter.

"Heartiest birthday greetings to Hon'ble President Shri #RamNathKovind ji. Your dedication towards the nation is an inspiration for us all. I pray for your good health and long life," Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said. 

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee greeted the President on his birthday.

"Conveying my respects and good wishes to Ram Nath Kovind ji (@rashtrapatibhvn) on his birthday," she said in a tweet. 

Kovind was the Governor of Bihar before being elected as the President of the country last year. Kovind assumed office as the 14th President on July 25 last year. 

A commerce graduate and LLB from the Kanpur University in Uttar Pradesh, Kovind has been a successful lawyer.

He practised in the Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979 and was the central government's standing counsel in the Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993.

Kovind became an Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court of India in 1978.

He practised in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court for about 16 years until 1993.

He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 1994 from Uttar Pradesh and served two consecutive terms till March, 2006.

Kovind was born on October 1, 1945 at Kanpur (rural) in Uttar Pradesh. He has a son and a daughter with wife Savita whom he married in 1974.
