Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi took the political battle around demonitization to poll bound Uttar Pradesh (UP). In Kanpur, Modi attacked Opposition for not allowing Parliament to function.

In Jaunpur, Gandhi alleged that the note ban had punished the poor with cash crunch. Modi hit back, saying the Opposition was defending the corrupt by opposing the ban on 500 and 1,000 rupee notes aimed at eliminating black money.

In Delhi, the Congress lashed out at the government for its two recent orders, alleging that the banks have been turned into police stations.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said Modi government has conducted a dual surgical strike on the employees, industrial work force by reducing the interest rate from 8.8per cent to 8.65per cent for all Employee Provident Fund contributors, and also banning deposit of more than Rs 5,000 in demonetized notes. He said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had promised that anyone can deposit scrapped notes in banks up to December 30 and in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) till March 31 by filling up a form.

Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh wrote a strong letter to the PM amid a sense of disappointment among opposition leaders over Rahul Gandhi's reluctance to reveal the information about "personal corruption" of the Prime Minister. Rahul made a scathing attack on the Prime Minister at his Jaunpur rally in Uttar Pradesh but avoided making any reference to his explosive threat In his letter, Singh confronted Prime Minister for his charge on the Opposition fighting to protect the corrupt. In a letter to the PM, he asked why it was soft on BJP leader Janardan Reddy who spent hundreds of crore on his daughter's marriage? Why are you not acting swiftly on Lokpal, Whistle Blower Protection Act, Benami Properties etc?"

The party also released a list of as many as 125 orders issued by the government since the demonetiszation. Surjewala said the government has really made everyone cashless, be it the people, banks or ATMs while only the e-wallet companies licensed by the Modi government in 2015 are flourishing under the PM's call for digitisation of the economy.

The e-wallet companies are making 2.5 to 5 per cent profit which means a 100-rupee note exchanged 20 times becomes zero as these companies make Rs 100 on 5 per cent commission they charge, the Congress spokesman explained.
