Terming free press as the cornerstone of a vibrant democracy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence that the rise of social media and mobile news will widen its reach and make the space of media more democratic and participative.

He also underlined his government's commitment to upholding freedom and press and expression.

"We are fully committed to upholding freedom of press and expression in all forms. May our media space be used more and more to showcase the skills, strengths and creativity of 125 crore Indians," the PM tweeted.

Noting the rise of social media and news being consumed through mobile phones in this age, Modi said he was sure these advancements will further the reach of the media and make the media space even more democratic and participative.

"The role of the media in giving voice to the voiceless is commendable," he said and lauded it for adding great strength to his pet scheme 'Swachh Bharat Mission' and effectively furthered the message of cleanliness over the last three years.

Modi, who has often been seen in selfies with camerapersons and reporters on the ground said, he appreciates the hardwork of the media, especially the reporters and camerapersons, who tirelessly work on the ground and bring forth various news that shapes national as well as global discourse.

In his message on National Press Day, BJP chief Amit Shah said he applauds the commitment and efforts of every media person who works tirelessly to uphold the value of the fourth pillar of democracy.
