On Tuesday, the Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers and Parliamentary Affairs Ananth Kumar met the Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu to discuss using the railway infrastructure to promote the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).
“An in-principle decision to open Jan Aushadhi Kendras at railway stations and other railway establishments has been taken,” said Prabhu. Seniors officials from both the ministries have been asked to work out the modalities in two months.
With generic medicine stores at railway stations, Kumar said that the accessibility of cheap, quality generic drugs for the common man will improve.
Earlier in May, the Chemicals and Fertilisers Ministry said that plans are afoot to open Jan Aushadhi stores at around 1,000 major railway stations across India. The government also plans to open such outlets at bus stands in different states with an aim to take the network to small towns and villages.
