Veteran photographer S Paul died at a private hospital here after suffering from illness for the last few months, leaving a void behind in the field that he excelled in with panache.

Born on August 19, 1930, in Pakistan, Paul died last night, a few days shy of turning 87 on World Photography Day.

He was the elder brother of renowned photographer Raghu Rai.

"He had been ill since November 2016 and left us on August 16 night. He was cremated today at the Nigambodh Ghat," his son Neeraj Paul said.

A pall of gloom descended over his family, friends and admirers, many of whom considered him as their "guru".

A host of well-known photographers attended the funeral service of the late photographer and paid respect to the departed soul.

"He touched many a lives, either in person or through his inspirational life. His contribution to the field is immense and he will be sorely missed by the photographers fraternity," said a photographer, who attended the cremation.
