    The Maharashtra government on Friday increased the price of petrol with effect from Saturday by Rs 3 per litre by hiking value added tax (VAT) rates. On Friday, the finance department issued a notification hiking the VAT rates on petrol from Rs 6 to Rs 9 per litre. VAT collections are the highest source of revenue for the cash-strapped state government.
