A Border Security Force constable Anil Kumar deployed along the India-Pakistan border in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar district was arrested by Punjab Police on January 8, days after Pathankot attack for his role in cross-border smuggling of contraband and other illegal activities.

He had, in fact, been indicted by the one man SCIO conducted by Commandant PK Rathore belonging to 112 Battalion, documents reveal.
At the time of his arrest, Punjab Police did not disclose the fact and since the development came days after terrorist attack on the Indian Air Force (IAF) base in Pathankot on January 2, it raised speculation of Kumar's links with it.
Official sources confirmed that it was the BSF that handed over Kumar to Punjab Police following formal request from the latter. Punjab Police, on the other hand, zeroed in on him while questioning three other alleged smugglers it had arrested.
Kumar, who originally hails from Punjab, was found to have received two installments of Rs50,000 and Rs 39,000 in his wife's bank account for facilitating cross border smuggling.
BSF has come in for heavy criticism in the wake of the Pathankot attack for it mans the International Boundary (IB) with Pakistan in Gurdaspur sector from where Pathankot attackers are suspected to have crossed over from. The National Investigative Agency (NIA) is, however, still probing the case.
