Relations between India and Pakistan ended rather on a sour note in Year 2014 with the latter resorting to "unprovoked" firing inviting heavy retaliatory fire by the Indian troops as per the newly coined policy.
The firing by Pakistan that killed one Indian jawan and the retaliation on India's part that, according to Border Security Force (BSF), killed four Pakistani Rangers marks further dip in the relations of the two countries that have already soured because of Pakistan's deliberate moves to allow prime accused of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, Zakiur-Rehman Lakhvi get out of the prison on bail.
Director general of the BSF, D K Pathak, on Wednesday briefed union home minister Rajnath Singh on cross border firing.
Pathak informed that the firing stopped in the evening at the request of Pak Rangers for ceasefire by showing the white flag. He further said that the firing has stopped since then and the situation is totally under control.
Singh has told director general, BSF to provide suitable and appropriate reply if any further unprovoked firing takes place.
Defence minister Manohar Parrikar has also instructed the India Army to retaliate with "double the force" if the Pakistani military fires on the Jammu and Kashmir border.
"I would say, don't agitate, react appropriately but without holding yourself back. When something happens, retaliate with double the force," Parrikar said.
Inspector general of BSF, Jammu frontier, Rakesh Sharma told dna that Pakistani rangers fired at BSF patrol party at 11.40 am killing one jawan in Samba district.
"This is the cowardly act on part of Pakistan. Patrolling is routine on the borders. Pakistanis patrol their area and we do in our area. We never fire at their patrolling parties," Sharma said.
BSF troops gave a befitting reply to Pakistani firing to silence their guns. "Firing continues. We replied in a befitting manner to firing. They will get a befitting reply for violating the ceasefire. Yesterday there was fire at Hiranagar", he said.
Pakistani rangers were using small calibre weapons and mortars to target the Indian positions in the sector. "They are using small arms and 51 mm mortars," IG BSF said.
