Staring at imminent defeat in its proxy war against India, Pakistan is now using the social media to recruit the gullible Kashmiri youth for militancy in the strife-torn Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir Police figures reveal that 15 to 17 youth have joined militant ranks in the valley during the last four months. The relentless social media campaign by Pakistan and the religious exploitation are some of the reasons for young boys to join the militant ranks in the valley.

“It is certainly a point of discussion what driving force is (for the youth to join militancy). There are so many stages involved (about) who joins. For example except few, most of them are school or college dropouts. Of course social media--a relentless campaign started by Pakistan to lure the youth to join militancy and religious exploitation by such forces”, said Munir Ahmad Khan, inspector general of police, Kashmir Zone.

Khan’s statement comes against the backdrop of militants unleashing another round of psychological warfare on the social media in the strife-torn Kashmir.

Fresh videos of militants have flooded Facebook and other social networking sites to romanticize militancy and lure gullible youth to join their ranks beside outwit the security forces and garner public support.

A new video of militants dressed in pheran (traditional Kashmiri loose long gown used by people in winters to keep themselves warm) and Pathan caps have gone viral on the social media. Shot in undisclosed dense forest area, the gun-wielding militants are seeing patrolling and raising their index finger (symbolizing oneness of Allah).  In another video, two militant commanders of Hizbul Mujhadeen and Lashkar-e-Tioba are seen wrestling in a room while a commentary runs in the background about the friendly bout.

Hiring the youth

IGP said security forces are targeting the local leaders of the militants who are influencing the youth to join militancy, particularly in the south Kashmir region.
