Tension has again gripped international border (IB) after Pakistan Rangers fired indiscriminately on the Indian forward posts and civlian labourers, killing one of them and injuring two others in the Samba Sector of Jammu division.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening when civilian labourers were carrying out construction work on the culvert inside the Indian Territory in the Samba sector.

"At about 1705 hours Pakistan Rangers started unprovoked firing targeting BSF Naka mound and civil labourers who were carrying out construction work on the culvert well inside the Indian Territory. Reportedly three labourers suffered bullet injury," said a BSF spokesman.

The injured were shifted to the hospital where one of the labourers succumbed. Border Security Force (BSF) troops deployed on the IB immediately retaliated to silence the Pakistani guns. "BSF troops also gave befitting reply (to Pakistani firing). Firing from both side stopped at 1730 hours", said the spokesman.

The fresh round of firing on the borders came a month after BSF and Pakistan Rangers reportedly broke the ice and decided to uphold the border ceasefire in the meeting held in New Delhi in September. The Indian delegation was led by BSF director General DK Pathak while Pakistan Rangers team was led by senior Rangers Director General (Punjab) Major General Umar Farooq Burki.

The incident occurred at a time when Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is on a visit to the United States where he tried to rake up Kashmir issue with President Barrack Obama.

Official figures reveal that around 430 ceasefire violations occurred on the IB while 153 violations were reported on the LoC in 2014. Eight soldiers including four BSF men and four army personnel were killed in the cross border shelling. Official figures reveal there were a total of 347 ceasefire violations in Jammu and Kashmir including 199 along the LoC in 2013.
