Alarm bells are ringing for the security forces after terrorist infiltrations from Pakistan touched a five-year high in Jammu and Kashmir in 2016.

Official government figures reveal there have been 364 infiltration bids in 2016. In 2015 there were 121 attempts of infiltration.

The highest infiltration was recorded in 2012 when militants made 264 attempts of which 121 were successful. Infiltration dropped considerably in the following years given the robust anti-infiltration grid put in place by the army on the Line of Control.

"There was a push from the other side (Pakistan) for infiltration last year. The border was very hot, and they (Pakistan) facilitated the infiltration," SP Vaid, Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, told DNA.

2017 is posing a major challenge for the security forces who are gearing up to thwart the militant designs and maintain peace not only on the borders but in the hinterland as well. "Naturally, when more militants come in, it affects the nation in its entirety," said Vaid.

The record infiltration comes against the backdrop of the government reports that 59 local youth have joined militant ranks after the unrest began on July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen poster boy Burhan Wani was killed in an encounter at Bamdoora village in Anantnag district of south Kashmir.

Currently there are around 250 to 300 militants operating in Jammu and Kashmir. Nearly 225 of them are listed militants. Around 100 militants operating in the valley are Pakistani nationals. Majority of them owe allegiance to the Lashkar-e-Toiba headed by Hafiz Muhammad Saeed. Hizbul Mujahideen comes second with over 90 active militants in the Valley. Jaish-e-Mohammad and Al-Bader too has a small presence in the Valley.

Around 146 terrorists were killed and 76 terrorists arrested till December 2, 2016. Over 60 security force personnel were killed and 104 others injured in 97 incidents of encounters in Jammu and Kashmir till December 2, 2016.
