A day after Pakistan army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa visited the Line of Control (LoC), his troops intensified the shelling on the Indian forward posts and the civilians areas along the borders in Jammu division on Sunday.

From Line of Control (LoC) to International Border (IB), Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing and shelling thrice on the Indian forward positions and civilians areas on Sunday.

The first ceasefire violation was reported from Bimber Gali sector at 9.45 am when Pakistan troops fired indiscriminately on the Indian posts. Indian Army retaliated in equal measure to silence the Pakistan guns.

"Pakistan Army initiated indiscriminate firing of small arms and automatics along the Line of Control (LC) in Bimber Gali sector from 0945 hours. The Indian army posts are retaliating strongly and effectively. Ceasefire violation ended at 10.20 am," said Lieutenant Colonel Manish Mehta, defence spokesman at Jammu.

Two hours later, Pakistan army opened another front when they resorted to heavy firing on the Indian posts in Naushera sector of Rajouri district.

This is the third ceasefire violation on the LoC in the last 18 hours. On Saturday night, Pakistan army resorted to heavy mortar shelling and firing on the LoC in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district.

"There was no loss of life or property. Firing has ended this morning. We are alert and contingency plans are already in place to meet any exigency," said Tariq Ahmad Zargar, deputy commissioner of Poonch district.

Later, Pakistan Rangers seemingly went into an overdrive and violated ceasefire on the International Border (IB) in Ramgarh sector of Jammu division. Pakistan Rangers opened indiscriminate fire on the Border Security Force (BSF) posts in the Ramgarh sector at 10.45 am. BSF troops immediately swung into action and retaliated in equal measure to silence Pakistan guns.

The fresh ceasefire violation comes against the backdrop of Pakistan army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa's visit to the LoC in Pakistan occupied Kashmir where he reiterated that Pakistan will continue its support for the "right to self-determination for our Kashmiri brothers".

Official figures reveal there were 228 incidents of ceasefire violation along LoC and 221 incidents of ceasefire violation along the International border in 2016. Thirteen civilians were killed and 83 others were injured while eight Army personnel were killed and 74 others were injured. Five BSF personnel were also killed and 25 others also injured in these incidents.

In 2017 till February, there were 22 incidents of ceasefire violation along the LoC and six incidents on the International Border.

Official figures reveal in 2015 around 405 incidents of cross border firing have taken place along the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kashmir killing 26 people including 16 civilians, six army men and four BSF men. Of which 253 incidents of cross border firing have taken place along the International Border and 152 incidents along the Line of Control.
