A day after Tamil Nadu government introduced Bills to extend the term of special officers of the local bodies by another six months, former union minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Friday hit out at the ruling AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu for not holding the local body polls and wondered why should not the AIADMK ministers resign and President's rule imposed in the state.

"If there is no need for elected representatives in the local bodies and if special officers can run the district administration, why should elected representatives run the state government," Chidambaram tweeted.

Two Bills were introduced in the Assembly on Thursday to extend the term of special officers for six months from June 20. This is the fourth extension for the special officers who were appointed in October 2016 following the expiry of the term of the elected bodies. The Tamil Nadu government has cited litigations and the elaborate process of delimitation of territorial wards of the local bodies as per the 2011 census as reasons for the delay in holding the polls.

In another tweet, he asked if the AIADMK does not have confidence in the elected representatives, why should they have ministers in the Tamil Nadu government? "Why not Tamil Nadu ministers resign and President rule imposed?" he wondered.

While introducing the Bill, Local Administration Minister SP Velumani blamed the DMK saying local bodies elections could not be held due to the cases filed by them. He said the elections would be held after completion of the delimitation process. DMK's Saidapet MLA and former Chennai Mayor M Subramanian denied the Minister's charge and pointed to the stagnation of development work in the local bodies in the last two years.
