Optical fibre cables and duck pipes worth several lakh of rupees were today destroyed when fire broke in the area where they are kept in the city, police said.

About ten rolls of duck pipes belonging to Airtel and Vodafone and about 1500 meters long OFC wires were completely destroyed when fire broke off in the storage area in Rynjah at around noon time, police said.
The matter was brought to the notice of the police who were on noon duty in the area and also the fire services by passers by.

Fire service personnel who rushed to the scene immediately put off the flame but the pipes and OFC were damaged in the fire.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained even as nearby residents said left over cigarette butts could be the reason for the fire.

An eyewitness who do not wished to be named said boys usually play in the storage area since it was kept in the open and there are some who use it as a smoking joint.

The storage area is an open area next to a football field where boys play.

Police did not rule out the handiwork of miscreants even as investigation in this regard is on.
