Odisha: Samaleshwari Express derails, engine catches fire, 3 dead

The engine, luggage car and a general class compartment got derailed after Samaleshwari Express from Howrah to Jagdalpur, rammed into OEC repair car which was carrying repair work on the track.

At least three people were killed after a train rammed into an OEC repair car which was engaged in repair work between Singapur raod and Keutguda in Odisha. 

The engine, luggage car and a general class compartment got derailed after Samaleshwari Express from Howrah to Jagdalpur, rammed into OEC repair car which was carrying repair work on the track. 

Those dead in the accident are railway personnel who have been identified as Sagar, a senior section engineer, Gouri Naidu, technician and a senior railway officer Suresh. The engine of Samaleshwari Express caught fire after the train hit the OEC repair car.

The mishap occurred in Rayagada district at 4:30 pm. The fire brigade and ambulance arrived at the spot immediately afterwards.

East Coast Railway has ordered an inquiry into the matter by Commissioner of Railway Safety, Kolkata, an independent statutory authority under the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

According to sources, station masters on duty at Keutugusa and Singapur road have been suspended.
