NRI divorces his wife of four weeks through WhatsApp

The Kerala state women's commission adalat has now asked the department of non-resident Keralites' to locate the husband and asked the groom’s parents to bring him to their hearing.

She is 21 and still studying in college in Alapuzha, Kerala. Her husband of ten days left for Dubai but three weeks later she received a ‘triple talaq’ - on WhatsApp!

A news report in a leading daily states that the bride’s side gave Rs 10 lakh as dowry to the groom along with 80 sovereigns of gold. The bride is doing her dental studies course but when she received the WhatsApp message she quit college and returned home from her in-laws' house. She has now filed a complaint with Women’s Commission Adalat in Kottayam. 

Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan has conducted a study in 10 states which shows how Muslim women oppose the practice of ‘triple talaq’ through new media like SMS, Skype, email and WhatsApp. The majority also want a ban on the practice of triple talaq. The practice of ‘triple talaq’ over WhatsApp has been a highly debated topic among Islamic scholars as well. 

The Kerala state women's commission adalat has now asked the department of non-resident Keralites' to locate the husband and asked the groom’s parents to bring him to their hearing. B Sugathakumari, an activist-poet and former chairperson of the state women's commission, has stated that commission would provide protection and legal aid to the girl and her mother adds the report. 

Meanwhile, Sayyed Attakoya Thangal, the district president of the Ulama, has stated that a divorce will be granted to the couple only after speaking to all the parties concerned. The report adds that Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen state president TP Abdulla Koya Madani has called a WhatsApp divorce an 'oversimplification of the entire process'.
