Now, man in Mumbai denied flat for being Maharashtrian

Discrimination against flat buyers on the basis of religion, ethnicity and food preferences seems to have now become a routine habit in the financial capital of the country.

In an another incident of discrimination, a Mumbai builder allegedly refused to sell a flat to a youth for being Maharashtrian.

According to a leading daily, Vaibhav Rahate, a car dealer, went to the builder’s office at Malad on May 4, as he wanted to book a flat at Celestial Heights on SV Road for his sister. But the staff member at the developers office told him that the apartments were not for sale to 'Maharashtrians, Muslims and other non-vegetarian buyers'.

Rahate approached the Malad police who recorded his statement but did not take any action even after 25 days. But after the intervention of Congress President Sanjay Nirupam on Friday, zonal DCP Vikram Deshmane instructed the Malad cops to conduct an inquiry and file an FIR, said report.

However, the Shrinathji Group of developers denied any discrimination. They said that Rahate was denied flat because of his approach and the way he spoke with the staff.

A day ago, Muslim woman was refused a flat for rent in Mumbai by a builder allegedly on grounds of her religion. Whereas, a week ago, Zeeshan Ali Khan, the MBA graduate was denied a job in the diamond exports firm for being Muslim.
