The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), a senior partner in Bihar's ruling Mahagathbandhan, alleged betrayal on Sunday when party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav's younger son and Deputy Chief Minister Tejaswi Prasad Yadav obliquely attacked Bihar CM Nitish Kumar for indulging in "political opportunism", and targeted Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi for practising "part-time politics".

"With our opportunistic behaviour or political manipulations, we may score a few goals and make or break governments, but history, unlike television anchors, shall bear witness to the fact that when people needed us to strengthen the cause of progressive and people-centered politics, we decided to look the other way," Tejaswi said, as a part of his 'Dil Ki Baat' — a dialogue meant to be a reply to PM Narendra Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' — apparently attacking Nitish for supporting the NDA in the July 17 presidential polls.

Tejaswi also seemed to be fuming at the Rahul when he said, "The opposition parties also need to realise that politics cannot be a part-time venture… I know the Opposition in the country is also in confusion and a bit scattered at this moment due to egocentric behavior and misplaced priorities."

His address has stirred up a hornets' nest with Nitish's JD(U) hitting back, saying such statements were bound to weaken ties. Congress leaders, too, condemned Tejaswi's words, raising a question mark on the future of the grand alliance government in Bihar.

Under attack from allies, the junior Yadav backed down saying his statement "refers to Opposition in general and not related to Presidential election". However, political experts believe Tejaswi's statement had already done a lot of damage by then.

This did not go down well with the JD(U) with state party president Bashishtha Narayan Singh asking how will the Mahagathbandhan continue like this? JD(U) spokesperson Sanjay Singh said, "We are not wearing bangles and are capable of giving replies, but it will only weaken the alliance." On Saturday, an RJD MLA had called Nitish a cheat.
