Now Facebook, WhatsApp access for Bihar college students under free WiFi scheme

Around 50,000 students from 300 colleges in Bihar are availing the free WiFi service offered by the Government of Bihar as a part of its 'Saat Nishchai' scheme.

The stats were shares by deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi following a review meeting of the free WiFi campus scheme. “The students will now get the facility of one time logging in with access to use WhatsApp, Facebook, Youtube and e-commerce websites to attract more students to make use of the scheme,” Modi said.

The users are allowed to download up to 1GB data per day and a total of 10GB in a month. “Earlier, they had to login multiple times using their User ID and Password, but now they will have to log in only once and their device will remain connected to the WiFi,” he added.

Modi said the Bihar government will spend around Rs 23 crore to install solar panels to ensure uninterrupted power supply so that the WiFi facility functions smoothly.

Around 60 engineers who look after the maintenance of the WiFi equipment in colleges have also been asked to hold camps to make the students aware of the facility and encourage them to register for it.

Modi said the number of users increased from 20,000 in June to over 49,000 at present.

The scheme was launched on the occasion of Bihar Diwas in March 2017 to help youngsters become digitally smart and progress in life. It was one of CM Nitish Kumar’s pre-poll commitment and the government had sanctioned Rs 220 crore for it.
