Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday clarified in the Parliament that nothing will be removed from NCERT textbooks, as demanded by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-affiliated Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas headed by Dina Nath Batra.

DNA was the first to report about Batra's demands. In a letter to the National Council for Educational Research and Training, he had written that Urdu and Persian words, and poetry of Mirza Ghalib should be removed from Hindi textbooks of Classes 1 to 12.

Batra had also demanded that works of Rabindranath Tagore be removed from the books, which created an uproar in the Parliament and the minister had to give clarifications on the issue.

Javadekar said that the government hails those who contributed to the culture and nothing will be removed from the NCERT books. "We respect all those who have brought literature and culture, we hail everybody. We have only asked for suggestions to correct factual errors in NCERT book and so far the council has received more than 700 suggestions. We will scruitinise all those suggestions and make changes accordingly. We will not do anything which will create some problem," the minister said in the Parliament.

NCERT had, about two months ago, called for suggestions from teachers, educationists and others on things that they think can be corrected in NCERT books as the council is reviewing its books. In this context, Batra had written to the council to remove a number of things from the Hindi textbooks of the council. His primary problem was the presence of Urdu and Persian words in the textbooks, couplets by Mirza Ghalib and poetry by Avatar Singh Pash, the well-known revolutionary poet. He also wrote about removal of works of Tagore from the books.
