The Pushkar fair which is popular for trade of live stock, this year will not see trade of equines and particularly horses. Rajasthan state government has passed an order to ban the entry of horses during the mela due to the spurt in glanders disease.

The fair will be held from October 23 to November 4. The state has already seen the deaths of horses due to glanders in Dholpur and Udaipur districts already.

The Pushkar animal fair sees a huge number of horses, particularly the Marwari and Kathiawari breed. Breeders as far as Punjab, Gujarat and even Maharashtra come to the fair for sale or purchase of the Indian horse breeds. However due to the glanders outbreak, a restriction has been imposed.

"Some time back a case came to light in Dholpur and then at Udaipur. The decision has been made to not allow horses at the fair so that the disease does not spread which is fatal for animals. The orders would stand in effect till the time the authorities are sure that the disease has died out completely in the area," said Ajay Kumar Gupta , Director of animal husbandry department.

The infamy of the disease can be gauged from the fact that an Act is dedicated to just the disease, called the Glanders and Farcy Act. "The latest outbreak is a result of mules being used in brick kilns at Uttar Pradesh. The mules were brought back to Dholpur here the first case was reported in recent times. It then spread to Udaipur and Rajsamand. The disease spreads from equines to humans hence it is very dangerous. An incident was reported in Kishangarh last mont,h" said Bhawani Singh Rathore, additional director, animal husbandry department.

The animal husbandry department has made an appeal to breeders and equine keepers to abide by the orders as it is in their benefit.
