As the coronavirus trend in India sees a downward graph in terms of fresh as well as active cases, a government-appointed panel has recommended that no fresh lockdowns should be imposed at district or state levels.

"No fresh lockdowns should be imposed on district or state level to contain the spread of COVID-19 unless there is an imminent danger of healthcare facilities being overwhelmed," said a government-appointed committee chaired by IIT Hyderabad professor M Vidyasagar.

The committee has also claimed that if all protocols are followed, the pandemic can be controlled by early next year with minimal active symptomatic infections by February-end.

New coronavirus cases and deaths have declined in last three weeks, said the chief of expert panel coordinating efforts to tackle pandemic VK Paul, also a member of Niti Aayog.

"We cannot rule out possible second wave of coronavirus infections in India in winter season," Paul added.

He also said that once the vaccine is available, there will be enough resources for delivering and making it accessible to citizens.

“In India, the new coronavirus cases and the number of deaths have declined in the last three weeks and the pandemic has stabilised in most of the states," Paul noted.

“However, there are five states (Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal) and 3-4 Union Territories (UTs), where there is still a rising trend,” he said.

In a reassuring remark, Paul said that the country has enough resources to deliver the COVID-19 vaccine once it is made available.

Three vaccines are in advanced stages of development in India, out of which 2 are in Phase II and one is in Phase-III. Indian Scientists and Research Teams are collaborating and strengthening the research capacities in neighbouring countries viz., Afghanistan, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Mauritius, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
