The manner in which it was done was not right. I didn’t like it too, says the Speaker Sumitra Mahajan

Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s hit-hug-wink ways didn’t enthuse the ruling BJP and Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. Crossing the floor from opposition to treasury benches or vice versa is seen against parliamentary ethics. So when Gandhi walked across the Well of the House to hug the Prime Minister and followed it with a wink at his fellow Congress MPs, the Speaker chastised the Congress president reminding him to maintain the decorum and sanctity of the House. “The manner in which it was done was not right. I didn’t like it too,” the Speaker said. She also said that the Congress chief’s wink after he went back to his seat after hugging the PM – “was not appropriate”.
The Speaker’s observation came soon after the Lok Sabha was reconvened after a brief adjournment during Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s speech. Singh said some people had started the ‘chipko (hug) movement’ inside the House. Taking a cue from this, Mahajan intervened saying even she did not like what Rahul Gandhi had done and imparted a short lesson on decorum, discipline. “We have to understand that it is upon us (the lawmakers) to maintain the sanctity of the House. Even I want all of you to live in love. Rahul is not my enemy, he is like my son,” Mahajan added. “Right now, he is the Prime Minister of India. He is not only Narendra Modi. I request you to maintain the sanctity of the chair,” Mahajan said.
Following Mahajan’s talk on appropriateness in the House, Singh said he is going to hug Kharge after the end of the Session.
