Niti Ayog infuses young blood as part of restructuring process

The National Institution for Transforming India (Niti) Ayog on Friday announced hiring of 46 young professionals under a restructuring process that it has undertaken massively since its inception a year ago.

The hirings are part of its Young Professionals Programme launched last year and coincides with the appointment of Amitabh Kant as full-time chief executive officer of Niti Aayog. Kant will take over next month after he finishes his current stint as secretary with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

As the principle think-tank of the government, Ayog, which was created to replace the now defunct Planning Commission is entrusted with responsibility of contextualising the sustainable development goals (SDG) with the national development agenda.

In the process of its restructuring, in the last one year, it has pruned secretarial staff of over 1200 it inherited from the planning commission to about 500.

The panel's mandate include becoming a think tank for Cente and States, besides raising its capacity so that it could monitor the policy implementation and it is looking at hiring sectoral experts, young professionals and consultants.

Niti Ayog is being hailed as a principal agency in helping prime minister Narendra Modi's high-pitched 'Minimum Government, Maximum Governance agenda.

Among the core responsibilities it has undertaken so far, besides promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and start-ups under the government's Atal Innovation Mission (AIM). For this, the plan body is currently also working on an inter-ministerial platform involving the ministries of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) , Department of Biotechnology and Department of Science and Technology.
