One of the four convicts sentenced to death in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case attempted suicide on Thursday in Tihar Jail.

According to ANI, convict Vinay Sharma attempted the suicide and has now been admitted to hospital.

Last year, Sharma had moved court demanding security after he was allegedly beaten up and abused by inmates.

In March 2013, one of the convicts, Ram Singh, had committed suicide in Tihar Jail. But his family members claimed it was murder.

In the infamous case, on December 16, 2012, six people, including a minor, had assaulted Jyoti Singh and her friend on a bus while they were returning from a movie. They tortured and gang-raped the woman and beat up the friend. She died in a Singapore hospital on December 29 even as large-scale protests engulfed Delhi. The incident and the case came to be known as Nirbhaya, before the parents of the victim publicly identified her as Jyoti.

It had sparked fresh outrage in 2015 when one of the convicts in the case, Mukesh Singh, made certain controversial comments in a documentary by filmmaker Leslee Udwin, that showed he felt no remorse for his acts.
