Actor-turned-politician Kamal Hassan's party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has also fielded its candidate Rajendran from Nilgiris constituency.
The seat was formed in 1952 and is reserved for candidates belonging to scheduled caste community.
AIADMK's C Gopalakrishnan is the sitting MP here who defeated DMK's A Raja in 2014 general elections by a margin of more than 1 lakh votes. However, in 2019, AIADMK has pitted M Thiyagarajan against DMK's A Raja.
The two major parties in Tamil Nadu — AIADMK and DMK — has entered into an alliance with a number of parties for the forthcoming elections.
AIADMK is contesting the election in alliance with BJP, PMK, DMDK, Tamil Maanila Congress, Puthia Tamizagam, Puthia Needhi Katchi and NR Congress. While the DMK has aligned with Congress, CPI(M), CPI, MDMK, VCK, IUML, KMDK and IJK.

2014: C Gopalakrishnan (M) of the AIADMK received 463700 votes. He thrashed A Raja (M) of the DMK who secured 358760 votes.
2009: Andimuthu Raja (M) of the DMK received 316802 votes. He defeated C Krishnan (M) of the MDMK who only got 230781 votes.
2004: R Prabhu (M) of the Congress received 494121 votes. He thrashed M Mathan (M) of the BJP who secured 257619 votes. The victory margin was over 2.5 lakh votes.
Tamil Nadu has a total of 39 parliamentary constituencies where 7 of them including Sriperumbudur, Chidambaram, Rasipuram, Pollachi, Perambalur, Tenkasi, and Nagapattinam have been reserved for candidates representing scheduled caste community. However, no seat here has been reserved for Scheduled Tribes.
