Taking forward the investigation into the trail of money used to fuel the unrest and terror in the Jammu and Kashmir, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) grilled eight people, including separatists in the national capital. Interestingly, the agency could not grill three top separatists on Tuesday as they were arrested by Jammu and Kashmir police when they were taking a flight from Srinagar airport.

Though the agency requested the J&K police to allow them to question them in custody, the police declined. Three separatists Altaf Ahmad Shah, son-in-law of senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani, Ajaz Akbar, spokesman of the Geelani-led Hurriyat group, and Mehrajudin Kalwal were arrested as a preventive measure ahead of death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani on July 8.

The agency grilled Shahid-ul-Islam, an aide of Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and a Kashmiri businessman along with six others. "They all have been called again for questioning," said a senior NIA officer.

Earlier, the agency had grilled as Mohammad Sultan, Altaf Funtoosh, Peer Saifullah, Bitta Karate, Zahoor Watali, Tariq Khan and Zahoor Khan.

Their names came up during questioning of three separatists leaders -- Farooq Ahmad Dar alias 'Bitta Karate', Nayeem Khan and Javed Ahmed Baba alias 'Gazi' of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.

The agency had also collected details of 13 accused charge sheeted pertaining to the damage caused to schools and public property.

The NIA has registered a formal FIR in connection with the larger conspiracy to fund separatists in the Valley from Pakistan. The FIR alleges that money received from Pakistan is used to fund violence in the Kashmir Valley, including activities such as stone pelting on security forces and torching of schools and government buildings.
