NIA arrests youth for providing weapons to Islamic State-linked terror group

The agency wanted to know how these men procured so much explosives and country made arms.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly providing weapons to members of a suspected ISIS-inspired terror group Harkat-ul-Harb-e-Islam (War for the cause of Islam) who were arrested recently. The accused, identified as Naeem, was arrested from Meerut on Thursday night. "He supplied weapons to the 10 men arrested in the case," the NIA said.

The agency, to know the source of arms and ammunition and explosive materials procured by the alleged members of the ISIS-inspired module, had questioned dozens of people across the two Delhi and Uttar Pradesh and carried out several raids.

The seized items include 25 kg of explosive material, such as Potassium Nitrate, Ammonium Nitrate, Sulphur, Sugar material paste, 12 pistols, 150 rounds of live ammunition, 1 country-made rocket launcher, 112 alarm clocks, mobile phone circuits, batteries, 51 pipes, remote control car triggering switch, wireless digital doorbell for remote switch, steel containers, electric wires, 91 mobile phones, 134 SIM cards, 3 laptops, knife, sword, ISIS-related literature and approximately Rs 7.5 lakh cash.

The agency had arrested 10 alleged Islamic State-inspired module members, including the group head Mufti Suhail for planning terror attacks targeting important personalities and security establishments as well as crowded places in the National Capital Region.

Those arrested include Suhail (29), Anas Yunus (24), Rashid Zafar Raq (23), Saeed (28), Saeed's brother Raees Ahmad, Zubair Malik (20), Zubair's brother Zaid (22), Saqib Iftekar (26), Mohammed Irshad (in 20s) and Mohammed Azam (35).

The agency arrested these members of IS module after they conducted searches at 17 locations across Lucknow, Hapur, Amroha, Seelampur, Meerut and Jafrabad in connection with its probe. "To disrupt and dismantle the module, searches were carried out at six places in Jafrabad and Seelampur in Delhi, and 11 places in Uttar Pradesh; six in Amroha, two in Lucknow, two in Hapur and one in Meerut and huge quantities of explosive material, arms and ammunition and other incriminating material and documents were seized," the agency said .

The group was under surveillance for two months and once they got enough evidence to nab them, the NIA carried out simultaneous raids with the help of the anti-terror units of Delhi Police and Uttar Pradesh Police.

A rocket launcher, several weapons and a cache of ammunition were recovered from the spots. "Recovery includes a rocket launcher, several weapons, ammunition and explosives. They were at an advanced stage of carrying a series of blasts," NIA Spokesperson Alok Mittal had said.
