In the ongoing nationwide operations against purported Islamic State (IS) supporters, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), with active support of Uttar Pradesh (UP) Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), arrested pro-IS cleric Abdus Sami Qasmi, a resident of Seelampur in Delhi from Hardoi district in UP on Friday.

This takes the total number of IS supporters arrested by the NIA to 20 in the two ongoing cases. Besides, the Delhi Police have also arrested five persons in a different case.

NIA was on the lookout of Qasmi as a non-bailable warrant (NBW) had been issued against him by the special NIA court earlier.

NIA sources said Qasmi has been charged under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and arrested in the case of ongoing investigation into the conspiracy to form a terror organisation and to launch terror attacks in the country.

The NIA brought him to Delhi and produced him before the special court on Saturday that granted his remand for 10 days for interrogation.

NIA claimed that Adbus Sami has been delivering provocative and inflammatory speeches in the support of ‘Caliphate’. He even launched a few websites wherein he uploaded his speeches to woo the gullible youth towards violent path.

“He has been instigating and motivating youth for anti-national activities and has visited various parts of the country in order to deliver his taqreer (speeches) and bayaan (statements). He runs a trust and madrassas and some of his financial transactions in this connection have been found to be of suspicious nature and the same are under investigation,” said a senior NIA official.

The probe agency has claimed that the arrested IS supporters were found to be in communication with some active members through chatting applications like Signal, Trillion, Telegram and Skype to motivate them to lure and join IS.

The agency said that it has sent the laptops, external hard disks, mobile phones and SIM cards recovered from the possession of the 20 accused for forensic examination and the results are awaited.
