Making a distinction between learning under a school system and the atmosphere at home under parents’ guidance, Bhagwat said it is the society that plays a larger role in the upbringing of children and developing them as patriotic citizens with nationalist thinking.
Pointing out that the problem does not lie in western education but in the western culture, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said the leading figures of the freedom movement, including Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, had been educated under a ‘western’ system but were never influenced by it.

“The Macaulay education system, which we say is a foreign education system, produced Vivekananda, Lokmanya Tilak, Gandhiji and Rabindranath Tagore... So why did that school education system not influence them?”
“The entire generation which participated in the freedom movement studied under the Macaulay education system,” he said while admitting that there is a “consensus in the society” for changing the current education system.
Bhagwat’s remarks come when various outfits related to RSS have attacked and spoken against ‘westernised’ education demanding an overhaul of the education system with more emphasis on traditional Sanskrit-based system.
Bhagwat was speaking at the launch of the Indian Education Manual (Bhartiya Shiksha Grant Mala) by Ahmedabad-based think-tank Punarutthan Vidyapeeth. Dinanath Batra, head of the Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan, who is known for his controversial statements on education, was also present at the event.
