The Congress on Thursday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demand and obtain credible and firm assurances from US President Donald Trump to reverse the decision that discriminates against Indian professionals for the grant of H1-B visas.

"Before embarking on the US visit, the PM should sort his out," said Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma, claiming that there has been a drop of 37 per cent in visas whereas Indian professionals constitute less than 0.06 per cent of the American work force.

"We do not want mere statements and photographs. We want answers and also for the Prime Minister to respond to and register our protest over the disparaging observations made about the Republic of India recently when the US decided to walk out of the Paris accord. We will wait for the Prime Minister's response or reaction," Sharma added.

In a bid to build up tempo for 2019 Lok Sabha general elections, the Congress has been trying hard to corner the BJP on various fronts since the celebrations on completion of three years of Modi government.

Questioning Modi government on the job front, Sharma said, it is now time to give an account of the miserable performance of his Government, his failure to provide jobs as promised, claiming growth but in fact the jobs are being lost.

"First of all the Prime Minister should make it clear whether he agrees with his President Amit Shah that BJP had never promised to provide jobs or to create jobs,"said Sharma.

Sharma also questioned Government's justification for its decision to reduce the import duties from 25% during UPA to 0% now.

Calling the reasons given by the government absurd, Sharma said, "The first reason that the wheat output or production in 2016 was very low is wrong as Government's statistics contradict that. India had record wheat output in 2016. There was no shortfall. The reason given that the Indian wheat produced by the Indian farmers has gluten and allergence whereas the wheat from Canada and Australia has no gluten is an illiterate statement."

"Wheat contains gluten irrespective of where it is produced. Only Millets, Bajra and Quinoa are gluten free. This Government's Ministers need education about what is glutton free, we will be very happy to educate them."
