Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy admitted on Tuesday that the people seen accepting money in the video in Narada News' sting did not have any vested interest.

“I am saying with a lot of responsibility that the people who were seen accepting the money in the sting did not have any vested interest. We have not taken a single penny on our personal interest. Our party supremo Mamata Banerjee has said that the party’s disciplinary committee is carrying out an investigation and the party will take action against leaders found guilty. I want the investigation to unearth the truth,” Mukul said at an election rally at Kalna in Burdwan district of West Bengal.

In West Bengal's political circles, this statement by Roy is being seen by as a counter to what the party supremo Mamata Banerjee had said last week. Banerjee had said that she would have considered the candidature of people seen in the video had the tapes come to light earlier.

On Sunday, speaking at a rally in North Kolkata, Banerjee had said that she would have "given a thought" before choosing her party candidates for the ongoing assembly elections if the Narada sting operation tapes had been "telecast earlier".

"It is election time, which is why these videos (Narada sting) are being telecast. Nothing can be done now. Candidates have already been announced. If it was earlier, I would have thought about it. Now I am waiting for the report of the investigation into the sting," Banerjee said.

This is not the first time that the party has done a flip flop regarding its stand in on the tapes. Earlier, when the Calcutta High Court was hearing three PILs filed to throw light on the tapes, party leader and senior counsel appearing for leaders seen in the video, Kalyan Banerjee had asked in court why it was being seen as a bribe when it could also be a donation to the party. However, on previous occasions, all party leaders have maintained that they did not accept any money as seen in the footage.
