The deceased has been identified as Madhav Kadam, 27, a resident of Loha taluka of Nanded district.
A drought-hit farmer, who had consumed poison outside the mantralaya on March 23, died on Saturday. The farmer, according to the police, had received less of relief money and was allegedly insulted by the 'sahib' at Nanded collectorate, when he dared to inquire about the discrepancy in payment. He then came to Mumbai and consumed poison outside the mantralaya, the police said.
The deceased has been identified as Madhav Kadam, 27, a resident of Loha taluka of Nanded district.
According to the police, Kadam consumed poison outside the main gate of the new administrative building of mantralaya at Churchgate around 9.40 am on Wednesday. He was immediately rushed to GT Hospital by the police.
After doctors gave permission to take Kadam's statement, a sub-inspector and an assistant inspector from Marine Drive station then recorded the same. In his statement, Kadam said that after the death of his father, the family survived on the earnings through farming.
"Kadam told the police that after the drought this year, the state government had declared Rs 6,800 per hectare as drought relief to farmers, but Kadam claimed to have received only Rs 4,400 per hectare. Since he got less relief money, he visited the collector's office at Nanded," said an officer from Marine Drive police station. The farmer further alleged that the 'sahib', however, sent him back insulted.
The officer added that Kadam, in his statement, has made it clear that he has no personal complaint against anyone.
On Saturday, Kadam's body was handed over to his relatives, who then took the body to Nanded. Marine Drive police have registered a case of accidental death in the matter.
