The case came to light after a pistol-borne men walked into a showroom of a cellular operator and threatened its employees over the disappearance of a mysterious device planted on the mobile towers in Sopore.
Police have launched the investigation and are looking for the armed men in a bid to unravel the mystery behind the installation of the suspicious devices.
"A few days ago, some people went to service providers and enquired about the devices. They specifically asked where their device is. We are trying to verify who are these people and what sort of device they were talking of," Garib Das, deputy inspector general of police, North Kashmir range, told dna.
Police said the people who visited the showroom were speaking in Kashmiri language and carrying a pistol. Sources said the armed men threatened the people to hand over the device or be ready for the consequences. This has set the alarm bells ringing among the security establishment across the valley.
"This is something very fishy. We are in the process of verifying what the actual matter is. Since the man was speaking in Kashmiri that means he is a local. We are verifying whether he is a civilian or a militant. We are investigating and trying to find out the exact details," said Das.
Police is working on different angles to unravel the mystery behind these devices. "We are checking when last inspection of the towers was done. We are trying to find out what equipment was installed on the towers. Was there any additional or suspicious equipment seen by then? These are some pertinent questions. Since the person who visited the showrooms were armed and it obviously has given a new spin to our investigation", said a police official.
Police is also in process of questioning the cellular company officials to crack the case. "It is a very serious matter. We do not know what equipment was there and for what purpose it was mysteriously installed. Therefore we need to question the officials so that we could get the better idea of the issue," said an official.
